Goldeneye Source: N64 Goldeneye Reborn on the PC

I feel the need to write this article because every time I talk to someone about the classically popular game on the N64, Goldeneye, and then mention that it was remade on the PC their eyes bug out of their head.  Yes, that’s right, Goldeneye from the N64 was remade on the PC!

It’s called Goldeneye Source and it is free.  It’s a mod for Valve’s Source Orange Box engine – the engine that runs Half-life 2.

The best part about it isn’t that it is free or on a modern game engine.  The best part is that the development team’s primary focus was to recreate the original as closely as possible “to bring the memories and experiences from the original GoldenEye64 back to life.”  I’d say they nailed it.

The recreation features many of the original maps and all of the original weapons and characters – all recreated on the Source engine with newer 3D models.  Online multiplayer is a thing, too.  Up to 64 players online, although most servers don’t allow for more than 16 because the maps were originally designed for only 4 players, although some of the maps have been expanded to allow more space and there are some entirely new maps available.

Multiplayer gametypes include all of the original and a few new ones.  Weapon sets still exist although random seems to be the most popular online.  AI-controlled bots are also possible for those of you that want to play offline.

There is no single-player option, yet, but I don’t know if it is in the works.  It would be nice to see but I’m grateful enough as it is with the multiplayer aspect.

What do I need to play the game?

First, you will need to download and install Steam.  If you don’t already have a free account for Steam, get one.

Once you have Steam running and logged in, you need to install Source SDK and Source SDK Base 2007.  To do that you’ll have to mouse over Library and then select Tools.

Once in tools find Source SDK and Source SDK Base 2007 in the list and install them both.  If Source SDK Base 2006 begins downloading too, let it download and install.

Your next step will be to download and install the Goldeneye Source files.  Go to the Goldeneye Source Download Section on Moddb.com.  As of the time of this post, the latest version is v4.2.3 released on June 22nd, 2013.

And now some screenshots for those that want to see the game first.  You can also view the Official v4.2 Goldeneye Source Trailer.
